How to read a dog food label
Dog-food packaging contains a lot of information.
Understanding a few key terms can make choosing between foods considerably easier.

Is it complete?
If the food is going to form your dog’s main diet, this is one of the first things to check.
A complete food is formulated to provide the nutrients your dog needs when fed appropriately.
A complementary food is intended to be fed alongside other foods.

Look at the ingredients
The ingredients list tells you what has been used to make the food.
But don’t judge the nutritional quality of an entire recipe by one ingredient.
What matters is how all the ingredients and nutrients work together.

Check the feeding guidance
Different foods have different energy densities.
That means 400g of one dog food isn’t necessarily nutritionally equivalent to 400g of another.
Use the manufacturer’s feeding recommendation as a starting point and monitor your individual dog’s weight and body condition.

Ask questions
You should feel comfortable asking a food company what’s in its meals, how they’re made and how much your dog should eat.
